Baby Steps
Let's face it, metal is dead. At least, it is in Baltimore. If you play in a metal band you know this to be fact, you've played enough shows for other musicians to notice this. Even if you are not quite willing to admit it yet. Some might even see this blog as down right blasphemous, trust me, I am trying to do what little I can to help the situation. I'd say the first step would be to give some thought to just what is wrong with metal in Baltimore. First and foremost, we are unwanted in most venues. We're (mostly) a group of cheap scumbags, the majority of metalheads can barely afford the cover. Forget about spending money at the bar, we show up wasted! Then you have the few diamond in the rough tough guys who need to start a fight for it to be a good night. Moshing is mostly dead these days and fighting was never cool so let's try and relax a little bit huh? So we aren't commercially viable, big deal right? Shit, we'll just set up in the living and invite our friends over. RAGE!!! Wrong. The police in Baltimore don't tolerate that shit, even if the neighbors DON'T complain. Guess we'll just have to promise this promoter we're gonna sell his tickets so we can have the "honor" of getting on his show with some sorta known regional "headliner". This is where we develop the majority of our problems. One approach is the idea that you'll just lie, and when the other suckers all sell the tickets then you get to play for a room of new people and find a new promoter to con. Too bad all the other bands had that same idea already. Now you're playing for the other bands, buying expensive drinks and wishing you never took the show. Another approach is to sell the tickets, I mean it IS gonna be a good show! So now you've busted your ass and sold the tickets, your friends are stoked for a good show and.... oh god these other bands suck balls. They sold the tickets, but that's only because they make up for a lack of talent with a combination of mom's money, a handful of idiotic and annoying friends and a try-hard "we're gonna be famous!" attitude. Ok so at least we can agree, ticket sale shows suck, for the most part. Stop doing them! So we have venues that don't want us, people who can't or won't pay 10 bucks at the door followed by a 6 dollar beer punching you in the dick. The final nail in the coffin is the fact that the fucking bands don't even want to be at their own show! Half the later bands show up... well, late. Half the opening bands leave early. Where is the fuckin' mutual support?! If you notice that a band conducts themselves this way, stop doing shows with them! Basically, we need a few baby steps to save metal in this town. The most important is to develop a set of standards. Have some pride. Hold those around you to the same standards or don't work with them. Not working is far better than selling your dignity. Metal is like a cockroach, we'll find a small dirty, dark corner to survive in, so stop compromising. I know it may seem like opportunities are few and far between but that is only because we've allowed a flood of infiltration. The true metalheads are caught in a vice grip between shitty try-hard bands and the promoters who wish to exploit them. I say we remove ourselves entirely, go back underground and let the dollar chasers do this bullshit without us. The 6 people that actually come to the show are there for us, not them. We're headed down the wrong path and we need to change course. Let's face it... Metal. Is. Dead. What will you do to save it?

I'll have new postings up at random intervals. I'll be sharing bands you should check out, shows to go to and shows I went to as well as pics and videos from those shows. Check back regularly, comment often and let's get a discussion started to try and do something about this sad state of affairs.
ReplyDeleteI have been in this scene for 22 years, this is nothing new except there is fewer holes to play in. Baltimore has given birth to many great punk/hardcore/metal bands...many have toured and tried to make it big and for some reason just didnt make it. Some how we just got overlooked. Baltimore only spits out douche bag bands to make it big....cuz thats what the masses want to hear. It sucks...but there is no reason to cry about it, it won't do any good. What we need is more people who want to hear great music. And metal is not dead in Baltimore, its out there. We have the Maryland Death Fest every year , which is one of the biggest metal fests in the U.S. and it gets bigger every year. People come from all over the world to go there. Thats pretty cool. I would have to admit shit was way cooler 15 years ago but times change, all we can do is find those dark corners and rock out with our friends and other bands...because we like good music , not the radio bullshit. I have booked my own shows for years, fuck the promoters and the ticket shit...thats for sure. I book shows at a local bar for good times cuz it was hard to bring people to the show...so i brought the show to the people...I can get 100 people at my show with ease but if we play downtown somewhere its like tumbleweeds blowing across the floor. The novelty of playing the clubs have worn off long ago but I do play when we are asked for bigger shows, hell yeah its cool when you have a crowd of new people. Hang tough..thats what separates the strong from the weak.Id rather hang with a few true heads than a room full of douche bags. So now Im gonna plug a show that is guaranteed to knock your socks off...Mike D's Annual Drinkin With Lincoln show...at Overlea Station..heres the scoop...

Mr. Bones,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't disagree more with this blog. As a founding member of Beyond The Scar, as well as Unbroken, and a memeber of JJRODD, I've spent the last decade performing in successful metal bands, complete with great followings and dedicated fans.
Allow me to comment on your points:
1) "First and foremost, we are unwanted in most venues."
What venues are you speaking of? I've booked the band at The Barn, Sinix, Recher Theatre, McAvoys, Fishhead Cantina, Rams Head Live, and Surf City, just to name a few. Champions, The Thunderdome, The Zu, and The House of Rock before they closed. I don't have a single venue on my wishlist that I don't already have the band in. Places like Rams Head Savage, Padonia Station, 8x10, etc. aren't metal rooms, so I don't consider us "unwanted" in those places. We wouldn't go over there, simply put. Just the same, a Jack Johnson acoustic cover duo wouldn't go over well on a Saturday night at Sinix...you pick and choose the right places to play and put your efforts there.
2)"We're (mostly) a group of cheap scumbags, the majority of metalheads can barely afford the cover."
Speak for yourself! I have a very successful career in sales, and have no problem "affording the cover". Aside from myself, I've yet to come across a single fan that didn't make one of our shows because of an inability to "afford the cover."
3)"Forget about spending money at the bar, we show up wasted!"
I can recall one time in ten years that a fan showed up at one of our shows wasted, and had to be asked to leave. ONE fan in ten years. That ain't a bad ratio. Still, if you're showing up wasted, what kind of impression are YOU setting?
4)"Then you have the few diamond in the rough tough guys who need to start a fight for it to be a good night."
The more I type, the more I'm intrigued as to what bands you support, and what venues you patronize, because you're so completely off-base. There are RARELY any fights at our shows, and we play "Raining Blood" by Slayer! As for other bands I've gone and seen...haven't seen any fights. In fact, if you want to watch a good fight night, visit any one of the downtown "popular nightclubs". No metal to be heard, but lots of adrenaline and fighting going on. They fight to Eminem and P.Diddy, not Pantera...at least from my experiences.
(continued)
ReplyDelete5)"Guess we'll just have to promise this promoter we're gonna sell his tickets so we can have the "honor" of getting on his show with some sorta known regional 'headliner'"
Not having any appreciation for an opportunity to perform in front of people, that aren't particularly your fans, and gaining new fans, is just absurd. If I perform in front of a "some sorta known regional headliner" and gain ten new fans enjoy our show, "like" our Facebook page, follow our band, and come support our shows, it's a win on any level. Chances are, they have friends that they'll tell about our band, and then our fan base will still continue to grow. I don't see the downside here.
6)"The final nail in the coffin is the fact that the fucking bands don't even want to be at their own show!"
This one's easy - you're playing with the wrong bands. Find new friends.
7)"The 6 people that actually come to the show are there for us, not them."
If you're drawing 6 people to your show, you're clearly doing something wrong, and need to quit blaming the world around you. Get off your ass and work hard. If you suck, then work at not sucking. If people enjoy your show, they'll come see you again. If you suck, and you act like an asshole to people who DO pay to come see you, AND your attitude supercedes your already lack of playing ability, then you deserve to have 6 people at your show.
8)"We're headed down the wrong path and we need to change course."
Perhaps it's YOU that is headed down the wrong path and needs to change course. Stop blaming everything and everyone around you. Do what you love, and make it work. Leave no stone unturned, and work until you can't work any more. Relentless efforts pay off. Crying and bitching get you nowhere.
9)"Let's face it... Metal. Is. Dead."
No. It's. Not. Metal is alive and very well in Baltimore. No one's drawing like bands drew back in the 90's, it is what it is. But, there's places to play, fans to gain, and people to entertain who still want to hear classic and modern metal. You have to work to find them. You have to get your name out. You have to put in the time and effort, not spend time writing blogs griping about what's not right about the metal scene in Baltimore. FIX IT.
My long-running theory is this: Over the last ten years, the EXECUTION factor in the town has dwindled tremendously, while the EXPECTATION factor has risen to monstrous levels. With the onslaught of Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and all of the other social networks, the EXPECTATION is that if you post an event, people should come. The EXECUTION is minimal, but the EXPECTATION is huge.
Get off your asses, and put forth the effort. Create a mailing list. Build relationships with bar owners and managers. Show that you not only want to play on their stage, but you have interest in the success of their venue as well. Buy a deluxe flyer-building program from Best Buy and make unique, attractive flyers, and hang them in the clubs. Hell, when was the last time a band stood outside of Rams Head Live after a good metal show and handed out flyers?
Make video blogs, make yourselves seen. Stop being pissed because the girl who you work with won't come to your show. She doesn't like your music anyway, so why worry about her? Go find the people that would WANT to come to your show, and inject their interest. They're out there, and they're out there in this town.
Metal's not dead, it's alive and well. Trust in that....
While I appreciate the responses and the passion they contain, I'm sorry to say I think the point was lost on you both. This was not an attack on metal, this was something I'd hoped would wake some people up and realize that they must be more involved in order for things to get better. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding of what I wrote here, but stick with me guys, the point of this blog is to showcase bands in the area and shows that I go to in hopes that it will inspire others to get out to more shows. That's all.
ReplyDeleteMike- No crying here, like I said man just stick with the blog and you'll discover my true intentions. I'll definitely be at that show... I'm playing it.
Kory- I'm not going to entertain personal attacks and arguments that go nowhere on this blog. If you'd like to see what I am all about come to the show Mike referenced. I sing in Shakeface and I assure you, we don't suck and we don't have bad attitudes. The blog was not about ME, it's about all the people I see at shows who disappoint me. I go to shows, I pay the cover with ease because I too have a good job. A job which by the way is all men, and even if there were women around I wouldn't give a shit about them coming to my show since my girlfriend supports what I do. I don't show up to anything wasted and I want to see metal flourish as much as you do. Ask around, you couldn't be more wrong about me.
Next posting will be rant free, full of pics and videos from the Jucifer, Radical Discharge, Fortress and Harlequin Ichtyosis show at Talking Head this past Wednesday.
